Home Growing vs Supermarket: Carbon Footprint Comparison

A bunch of supermarket basil may have traveled 700–1,000 km by refrigerated truck, plus greenhouse heating and cold chain storage. That adds up to roughly 2–4 kg CO₂e per kilogram.

Home growing calculation: GrowlyBox uses ~15 kWh per kg of basil at ~0.45 kg CO₂/kWh = ~6.75 kg CO₂e. Higher at first glance — but this ignores food waste (30–40% supermarket loss vs. near-zero at home), packaging, and pesticide footprint.

With renewable energy: Home growing emissions approach zero.

Full picture: When food waste, packaging, chemicals and transport are all counted, home growing has a favorable environmental balance.
